History of the “Pride of Red Wing” Moss Baskets

For locals and visitors to Red Wing, one of the most memorable things about the city is the stunning hanging flower baskets that hang from the lamp posts along the streets of downtown.

The famous Red Wing hanging flowers baskets were a result of a Kiwanis project patterned off of a British Columbia flower project back in 1990.

Red Wing has embraced the flower basket project and it has grown every since. Currently, Hallstrom’s grows hundreds of the moss baskets in various sizes. The larger hanging baskets are 16” and filled with 13 colorful plants. In the spring, these beautiful flower baskets grace the lamp posts in Red Wing, transforming downtown.

Hallstrom’s own “Pride of Red Wing” baskets are a smaller version (14” in diameter) which are very easy to care for and not as heavy to hang. These make wonderful gifts in the spring and summer months.

Hallstrom’s regularly offers educational classes through Red Wing Community Education for people interested in creating their own personal hanging basket and kits are also available. Kids and gardening are also a special focus, with classes and tours aimed at young gardeners. A new class in 2006 will give kids the opportunity to make their own stepping stone to display in their own garden.
